A table runner with maple leaves embroidered along its length and the leaf shapes cut out of the cloth behind the stitching, so the surface underneath shows through the openwork. Embroidery gives the leaves a raised edge you can feel, and the cut-through means the runner takes on the colour of whatever it lies on — darker on bare wood, softer over a white cloth.
